Rodgers Surpasses Favre in Touchdowns: New NFL Record

In an exciting Week 3 matchup, quarterback Aaron Rodgers surpassed a historic milestone in his career. With a 12-yard pass to DK Metcalf, Rodgers reached 509 career touchdowns, surpassing Brett Favre’s 508. This achievement occurred during the second quarter of the game against the New England Patriots, where Rodgers connected with Metcalf to put the score 14-0 in favor of his team. In addition to this milestone, Rodgers moved into sixth place on the all-time passing yards list, surpassing Philip Rivers. Ben Roethlisberger is in fifth place with 64,088 yards. This touchdown put Rodgers in fourth place of all time in terms of passing touchdowns in NFL history, and positions him as the leader among active players. Now, Rodgers is only 30 touchdowns away from matching Peyton Manning, who has 539. In week 2, Rodgers tied Favre with his 508th touchdown pass, connecting with Metcalf on a 2-yard play against the Seattle Seahawks. Rodgers, who had four touchdowns in the Week 1 victory against the Jets, had downplayed the possibility of surpassing Favre’s record.

“It’s a longevity achievement,” Rodgers said about approaching Favre’s record. “…Many players are part of that. Some touchdowns are exceptional plays. In others, the scheme is so good… all you have to do is not mess it up, and then, sometimes, you throw a short one to a guy and he runs 60 and it goes in the column the same way.

Rodgers, selected in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft by the Packers, was in Favre’s shadow for three seasons before taking the reins in 2008. Rodgers threw 475 of his touchdowns with the Packers, while Favre recorded 442 in his 16 seasons in Green Bay. Rodgers added 28 in his two seasons with the New York Jets, although he only played one season after missing 2023 due to a ruptured Achilles tendon in the first game of the season. Favre, for his part, threw 44 touchdowns in two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and 22 in one season with the Jets.
