Raiders: Pete Carroll and Geno Smith suffer after 1-4, worst start

Pete Carroll’s optimism faded on Sunday afternoon. The Las Vegas Raiders suffered a painful 40-6 loss to the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, marking their fourth straight loss and the largest point differential since 2021. The Raiders’ performance in the last four weeks has contrasted with Carroll’s expectations. In July, at the start of training camp, he confidently declared: “We’re going to win a lot, and I don’t care who hears it.” However, the Raiders are now 1-4, the worst start in Carroll’s coaching career. The reunion with Geno Smith hasn’t gone as planned, as the starting quarterback threw two interceptions, raising his total to nine, the most in the league.

I’m processing this poorly, to be honest, because I expected to win from the start.

Las Vegas’ problems were evident in Indianapolis. Special teams struggled again, including a blocked punt that resulted in an ankle injury for All-Pro punter A.J. Cole. Daniel Carlson took over punting duties and missed a 57-yard field goal attempt. The Las Vegas defense, although it limited Indianapolis to 96 rushing yards, allowed the Colts to capitalize on opportunities in the red zone, going a perfect 6 for 6. The Colts also had an impressive 8 for 10 on third down.

We were outplayed.

After the game, Smith showed frustration, receiving comfort from receivers coach Chris Beatty and having a long conversation with Carroll. Smith’s fumbles have been a chronic problem. Smith’s nine interceptions are the most for a Raiders quarterback in his first 5 season games since 1982.

You have to go through the process, man. We hate it, and I hate it more than anyone.

Geno Smith
Unlike their opponents, the Raiders failed to capitalize in the red zone, missing on all four attempts. Smith’s first interception occurred on the Colts’ 11-yard line. Carroll considered changing to Kenny Pickett, but decided that Smith and other starters, like Crosby, needed more practice.

We need the reps… We need to run the system. We need to see players get opportunities to improve.

Carroll and the Raiders had reasons for hope, but the team they were expecting hasn’t appeared. The absence of Brock Bowers, due to injury, has also affected them. Carroll hoped the rest would help Bowers, but the receiver didn’t feel well. The only light at the end of the tunnel for the Raiders is that there are still 12 games left.

When life gives you shit, you have to find a solution and fix it. That’s what we’re doing now.
