FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins due to a knee issue, Falcons coach Raheem Morris reported this Friday. Penix suffered an injury at the end of last Sunday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the discomfort, he did not abandon the match. The Falcons (3-3) reported this week that Penix has a bone bruise on his left knee.
In the event that Penix cannot play, the Falcons would turn to veteran Kirk Cousins. Morris indicated that Cousins took a “significant” amount of repetitions this week, especially at the end. Cousins lost his starting job in Week 16 of last season to Penix, the Falcons’ eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft. Cousins got off to a good start with the Falcons, with a 6-3 record before a five-game stretch with nine interceptions. Cousins receives $27.5 million this season, despite not being the starter. Many expected him to be traded or released last season, and Cousins himself informed the organization that he would prefer to be a starter on another team. Cousins missed most of the voluntary offseason workouts. In June, during minicamp, he stated that any conversation about his desire to be elsewhere was an offseason topic and that he was focused on helping the Falcons win.Morris has expressed optimism throughout the week about the possibility of Penix playing. However, the team will wait until game day to make a decision.
