Nabers, Giants Star: Strategic rest, ready to shine

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Giants star receiver Malik Nabers did not participate in Wednesday’s latest practice sessions, but assures that it is part of the “process” he must follow. Nabers, who missed spring practice with a foot issue and suffered a shoulder injury in early summer, has been present at every training day, including the first half of Wednesday’s practice.

I’m fine. The coaches and training staff have this process they want me to do to be healthy when we’re ready to play. So I just have to do my job and follow the plan they’ve put here.

Nabers has been working regularly on his foot before and during practice, and admits to being in constant contact with the coaches. When he has been on the field as a receiver, no foot or other body part has been affected. Nabers has consistently made big plays this summer, especially on the field. The receiver, in his second year, believes he has improved after a standout rookie season, where he caught 109 passes for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. He is confident that these minor injuries will not limit his production this season.

I don’t think it’s affecting me. I’m still making plays, I’m still feeling good when I’m out there. Some days are better than normal. For now, I feel great.

The Giants will play their first preseason game on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. Coach Brian Daboll has not indicated whether Nabers and the starters will participate in the game. Nabers said it’s up to Daboll to decide when and if he will play in the preseason, and he is open to any decision by the coach. If the Giants’ starters play on Saturday or at any point in the preseason, Nabers is expected to be involved. He has quickly become the favorite target of starting quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson didn’t take long to notice Nabers’ talent. The veteran quarterback, impressed since the introductory press conference, praised his explosiveness and instincts, qualities he considers rare.

There are only a few people in the world who can do it like him. I think he is one of the best in the world at doing it.

Nabers has already proven to be a special player, being the Giants’ number 1 receiver and reaching the Pro Bowl as a rookie. Wilson believes the future is even brighter, as Nabers only gets better.

He’s entering his second year. Everything is new, but he definitely has experience in how he sees the game, his mentality, attacking the ball in the air. They’ve seen all the explosive plays he’s made on the field and even underneath. It’s going to be something special. I’m excited to play with him, obviously.
