Tre’von Moehrig Loses Appeal and Misses Next Game
Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig will not be able to play in the next game. The one-game suspension imposed on Moehrig for hitting San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings in the groin area was confirmed after the appeal.
The official announcement was made on Wednesday night.
Moehrig, who according to coach Dave Canales is dealing with an ankle injury, will miss Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. The suspension will cost Moehrig $65,000 of his $1.17 million salary, which is equivalent to one game’s pay.
Derrick Brooks, one of the three hearing officers jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFL Players Association, was the one who ruled on the appeal.
Near the end of Monday night’s game, which the 49ers won 20-9, television cameras showed Moehrig delivering a blow to Jennings’ groin area. Jennings did not react immediately and was seen asking the officials to call a foul. However, Jennings punched Moehrig after the game.
Jennings has not been sanctioned by the NFL.
This is a tough loss for the Panthers, who could also be without their starting cornerback Jaycee Horn, after he suffered a concussion against the 49ers. Horn remains in concussion protocol.
Carolina is 6-6, half a game behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5) in the NFC South, before Sunday’s home game against the Rams, who are 9-2.
Moehrig will be able to return to the Panthers’ active roster next Monday.
