Levi Onwuzurike Misses the 2025 Season Due to Injury
Detroit Lions defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike will not be available for the 2025 season due to an ACL injury.
Lions coach Dan Campbell announced that Onwuzurike underwent knee surgery earlier this offseason.
Levi’s surgery was significant, but it was necessary. It was out of his control, but it had to be done, so he will miss the season.
Campbell revealed the nature of the injury on Sunday, during the start of the Lions’ training camp. This news comes three days after Onwuzurike was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.
Onwuzurike, who signed a one-year contract with the Lions in the offseason, had been having a comeback season in 2024 after returning from a back injury that required spinal fusion surgery in 2022.
In the past season, the 27-year-old player started in 10 of his 16 appearances, accumulating 28 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a career-high 13 quarterback hits.
The Lions also placed defensive tackles Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo on the active/PUP list, along with left tackle Taylor Decker, cornerback Khalil Dorsey, guard Miles Frazier, and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez.
Campbell expects Decker to return to the lineup after the Lions’ Hall of Fame preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on July 31.
The coach commented that Decker is doing well and that work is being done on his recovery so that he regains his strength.
