Justin Herbert Undergoes Surgery for Hand Fracture

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent surgery on his fractured left hand this Monday in Los Angeles, the team reported. Herbert’s status is being evaluated day-to-day, and his participation in the Week 14 game against the Eagles at home will be determined during the week. The injury occurred during Sunday’s victory against the Raiders. Herbert, who suffered the hit from Jeremy Chinn, the Raiders’ safety, in the first quarter, continued playing, even throwing a touchdown. Then, he retired to the locker room for treatment. The quarterback stated that the most difficult part was holding the ball, which led the Chargers to play the rest of the game from shotgun and pistol formations. Coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that the team will prepare backup quarterback Trey Lance for field goal scenarios under center. That will be a point of emphasis this week. Harbaugh also praised Herbert’s ability to play through the injury.

There is never a gesture of pain or a hesitation. It’s amazing.

Two seasons ago, Herbert suffered a fracture in the middle finger of his left hand, also against the Raiders, which forced the Chargers to primarily use the shotgun formation. Herbert’s injury occurs at a crucial moment, as the Chargers seek to reach the postseason for the second consecutive time. Four of their last five rivals were in the playoffs last season.
