Jermaine Johnson Cleared to Play for the Jets After Injury

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – After eleven months of recovery following a ruptured right Achilles tendon, New York Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson is ready to return to the field. In an expected decision, the Jets activated Johnson from the physically unable to perform list to play this Sunday, indicating that he passed the medical tests and is authorized to train. Coach Aaron Glenn made it clear from the start of training camp that Johnson would be ready for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and that stance hasn’t changed.

“He is following the protocol to prepare himself,” Glenn said last week. “Everyone has their own protocol. He understands and is working hard to return, but we want to make sure we have him for the long term.”

Johnson, one of the three players selected in the first round of 2022, suffered the injury on September 15 in the Week 2 victory against the Tennessee Titans. He was coming off a standout season in 2023, which included 7.5 sacks and a Pro Bowl appearance as an injury replacement. His return will strengthen the defensive line, which has been without defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf strain) since July 31. Williams, who was expected to miss one to two weeks, is close to returning to training. The Jets have two joint practices with the New York Giants this week, with their annual preseason game scheduled for Saturday night.
