Dolphins: Cam Smith to NFI, Achane ready for Week 1; Reinforcements on the way

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Miami Dolphins cornerback Cam Smith will be placed on injured reserve with a non-football related injury, general manager Chris Grier reported this Wednesday. Smith, in his third year with the team, only participated in six games last season due, in part, to injuries. This year, the player was in an open competition for one of the two starting cornerback positions. However, he suffered an injury during the first week of training, which relegated him in the standings. Grier did not provide a timeline for Smith’s return.

“With NFI, we don’t really talk about what’s going on [publicly],” Grier said. “Cam has played some of his best games in the last two weeks, he’s been really good, so we’ll see what happens. We’ll work on it and then see what happens later.”

In related news, Miami signed cornerback Rasul Douglas to a one-year contract. Starting running back De’Von Achane has missed the last two weeks of practice due to a calf injury, although Grier indicated that all signs point to the player, selected in the third round of 2023, being ready for the first game of the season against the Indianapolis Colts. Additionally, Grier announced that Miami will look to add multiple veteran free agent running backs to their practice squad, with rookie Ollie Gordon II as the only healthy running back currently. Besides Smith and Achane, Grier also mentioned the signing of offensive lineman Kendall Lamm to reinforce the offensive line and the addition of kicker Riley Patterson to their practice squad, who is expected to handle kicking duties at the start of the season. Lamm, who spent the last three seasons with the Dolphins as a starting tackle, signed with the Eagles in the offseason but was released as part of Philadelphia’s initial roster cuts. Patterson, for his part, played five games for three teams last season, making 4 of 7 field goal attempts. In his career, he has converted 63 of 74 attempts. Grier noted that the Dolphins plan to activate him for at least the first three games while starter Jason Sanders is on the injured reserve list.
