Trevon Diggs Could Start the Season with the Cowboys Despite Uncertainty

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs faces uncertainty about his participation in the regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4. However, he could start the season on the 53-man roster. Currently, Diggs is on the physically unable to perform list and has yet to participate in training. Despite this, the player expressed feeling better than expected.

I feel much better than I should feel.

When asked about his possible participation in Week 1, Diggs responded cautiously: “Maybe, maybe not.” If Diggs starts the season on the PUP list, he would miss the first four games. However, if the team believes he can be ready sooner, they could include him on the roster from the start. Diggs mentioned that his rehabilitation has advanced recently and that he will intensify his efforts in the coming days, as the Cowboys make final decisions about the roster and prepare to face the Eagles.

I want to practice a lot. I want to have as many practices as possible, have game repetitions, have live repetitions. I haven’t practiced in a while, so I feel like practice will say a lot more about where I am.

The 2024 season for Diggs was cut short by a left knee injury that required chondral tissue graft surgery in January. In 2023, he only participated in two games due to a torn ACL in his left knee, suffered during a practice. The two surgeries were unrelated. During the offseason, Diggs opted to do most of his rehabilitation in South Florida, which led the Cowboys to apply a clause in his contract that cost him $500,000 of his base salary. Diggs commented that the decision on his return to action will be mutual, based on communication and the evaluation of his physical condition. After some communication issues in the offseason, Diggs stated that the relationship is now “great”. The presence of Diggs would strengthen a cornerback group that is currently limited. The Cowboys have been using DaRon Bland and Kaiir Elam, acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills, as starters, with undrafted rookie Zion Childress and veteran Kemon Hall playing in the slot. The Cowboys may look to reinforce the cornerback position via trade, free agent signing, or waiver wire acquisition after Tuesday’s final cuts.

I am very hungry. I am dying to get back on the field. I can’t wait.
