Good News for the Broncos: Marvin Mims Jr. Could Play in the Season Debut
ENGLEWOOD, Colorado – Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton revealed this Thursday that wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. received “good news” about the groin injury he recently suffered. According to Payton, Mims Jr. would be able to participate in the first game of the season, scheduled for September 7 against the Tennessee Titans. Mims left Wednesday’s training due to the injury, leaving the field accompanied by the Broncos’ medical staff mid-practice. The player underwent an MRI and other additional tests to assess the severity of the injury.Mims has been a key figure in training camp and the preseason, competing for a starting position on the offense. Alongside Courtland Sutton and Troy Franklin, Mims has accumulated the most plays as a receiver, working with quarterback Bo Nix. Last season, Mims recorded 39 receptions for 503 yards and six touchdowns. In addition, he was selected for his second consecutive Pro Bowl as a returner, leading the league with an average of 15.7 yards per punt return. Payton has expressed his intention to give Mims more opportunities on offense, highlighting his ability to generate explosive plays after catching the ball. Mims demonstrated his potential with eight receptions for 103 yards, including a spectacular touchdown reception that brought the game to overtime in the Broncos’ loss against the Cincinnati Bengals on December 28. During training camp, Mims commented that he hoped “that game, maybe, would open the coaches’ eyes a little bit or make them feel more comfortable, I can do more. I want to do more, I want to earn those opportunities.” Mims was the Broncos’ second-round pick in the 2023 draft.“The good news is that Marvin will return to training,” Payton declared on Thursday. “We have an extra practice on Monday and he will be working that day. So we are fortunate.”
