The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant move by acquiring wide receiver George Pickens in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The operation involves the transfer of a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick by the Cowboys, in exchange for Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick by the Steelers.
The need for a complementary receiver to CeeDee Lamb was evident for the Cowboys, and Pickens seems to be the answer. But, is he the definitive solution for Dallas? We analyze the impact of the trade for both teams.
Evaluating Pickens in Dallas
After not drafting any receivers in this year’s draft, the Cowboys finally get a partner for Lamb. Pickens fits perfectly, being a vertical receiver that will allow Lamb to play in the slot. Last season, Pickens ran deep routes in a significant percentage of his plays, accumulating 900 yards in 14 games in 2024 and 1,140 yards in 2023.
According to advanced metrics, Pickens has shown an improvement in his ability to separate from defenders since his rookie season. However, his ability to catch the ball has decreased. This suggests a possible positive regression, as the ability to separate is more consistent than the ability to catch.
The trade makes sense for the Cowboys. Given the team’s situation, giving up a third-round pick for a year of Pickens is reasonable, considering his low cost compared to the market.
However, there is a risk. The Steelers seemed to be fed up with Pickens, who accumulated unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and received criticism for his behavior. The one-year contract structure mitigates the risk. The Cowboys should let him play out the season and let him walk in free agency to get possible compensation.
Analysis for the Steelers
For the Steelers, this is good compensation. Despite the intention to get rid of Pickens, they got a second-round pick in return.
The Steelers had already acquired DK Metcalf, Pickens’ possible replacement, during the offseason. Although both could have played together, their styles overlap. However, the Steelers have a receiver problem. Behind Metcalf on the receiver list are Calvin Austin III, Robert Woods, and Roman Wilson.
An important factor is the quarterback situation. Without a quality second receiver alongside Metcalf, the Steelers are further from being immediate contenders. This makes it difficult to justify bringing in a star quarterback, even with limited options in the draft.
