49ers Bolster Receiving Corps with Marquez Valdes-Scantling
The San Francisco 49ers have begun to strengthen their receiving corps, reaching a one-year agreement with free agent Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
The news was confirmed after the veteran was released by the Seattle Seahawks, marking the start of Valdes-Scantling’s eighth season in the NFL.
Valdes-Scantling has had a notable career, playing his first four seasons with the Green Bay Packers, then two with the Kansas City Chiefs, and splitting last season between the Buffalo Bills and the New Orleans Saints.
In San Francisco, Valdes-Scantling is expected to have an immediate opportunity to contribute, given the current injury situation in the 49ers’ receiving corps.
After reducing their roster to 53 players on Tuesday, the 49ers only had two healthy receivers: Ricky Pearsall and Skyy Moore.
Jauan Jennings (calf), Jordan Watkins (high ankle sprain), and Jacob Cowing (hamstring) are the other receivers on the roster, with Cowing likely on injured reserve and the status of Jennings and Watkins for Week 1 still uncertain.
Also, Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from a knee injury and will miss at least the first four games.
Valdes-Scantling, with a career average of 17.4 yards per reception, is expected to bring a deep threat to the 49ers’ offense.
Despite the addition of Valdes-Scantling, the 49ers will continue to explore options to bolster their receiving corps.
San Francisco acquired Moore from the Chiefs last week to address their issues at the receiver position.
Additionally, Demarcus Robinson is suspended for the first three games of the season.
