Victor Wembanyama, out due to injury
The star center of the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama, will be out of the courts for a few weeks due to a strain in his left calf, according to reports. The franchise has decided to take precautions with its key player, who underwent an MRI on Sunday. Wembanyama is expected to be reevaluated in two to three weeks. Initially, discomfort in the left calf had been reported, ruling him out for the match against the Sacramento Kings.Wembanyama, 21 years old, had an outstanding performance on Friday in a physical NBA Cup game against the Golden State Warriors, where he scored 26 points, leading his team, in addition to 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. This was his third consecutive performance with 25 points and 10 rebounds, matching the longest streak of his career. In the absence of Wembanyama, Luke Kornet, who was signed as a free agent, took his place on Sunday, scoring 13 points with perfect field goal efficiency and three blocks. Kornet’s signing was specifically aimed at reinforcing the team’s frontcourt when Wembanyama was not on the court. Kornet had a plus/minus of plus-13 in the victory over the Kings. Kelly Olynyk and Bismack Biyombo could also see an increase in their playing minutes during Wembanyama’s absence. In his third season, Wembanyama averages career highs in points (26.2), rebounds (12.9), and assists (4.0), in addition to leading the league in blocks per game (3.6). After Sunday’s game, Wembanyama was seen in the locker room with a small bandage on his injured calf, but he showed no signs of discomfort.“Obviously, we’ve seen in this league recently that calf strains are not something to be taken lightly. We don’t want to force the situation,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson stated on Sunday.
