Fred VanVleet Assumes Presidency of the NBA Players Association

Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet has been chosen as the new president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), according to sources close to the situation. VanVleet, who succeeds CJ McCollum of the Washington Wizards, was elected during the Players Representatives Board meeting and will begin a four-year term immediately. McCollum’s mandate has expired and he will move to an advisory role.

McCollum, who served as president for the last four years and was previously executive vice president (2018-21), led the NBPA’s negotiations to complete the seven-year collective bargaining agreement in 2023.

VanVleet, NBA champion in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors and All-Star in 2022, is recognized for having reached all levels of competition and for his defense of the union. Additionally, VanVleet had experience in the G League and was a key piece of the Raptors 905 championship team in 2017. Recently, he signed a two-year contract for 50 million dollars to stay in Houston.
