Oklahoma City Thunder secures its spot in the NBA Finals after defeating the Timberwolves in the fifth game of the Western Conference Finals. The team, with an average age of 25.6 years, becomes the second youngest to reach this stage, only surpassed by the Portland Trail Blazers from the 1976-77 season. The Thunder dominated the match with a score of 124-94, demonstrating their ability to handle the pressure of a decisive game and celebrating in front of an euphoric crowd at the Paycom Center.

The focus in a closing game to reach the Finals is the most impressive thing.

Mark Daigneault, Thunder Coach

The first half was a clear reflection of the Thunder’s potential, who set an NBA record during the regular season with 68 wins. The team built a 17-point lead in the first quarter, limiting the Timberwolves to just nine points, their lowest amount in a quarter of the season and in the franchise’s playoff history. At halftime, the score was 65-32, with more turnovers (14) by the Timberwolves than baskets scored (12), thanks to the relentless defense of the Thunder, the number one in the league.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the attack with 34 points and eight assists, solidifying his performance as the MVP of the Western Conference Finals.

It seemed like we did everything we needed to do. We made the task difficult for the players we were supposed to. We were functioning perfectly in terms of their tendencies, our game plan, and how we wanted to impact the game.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points in the first half, matching Minnesota’s total, and was supported by Chet Holmgren (22 points) and Jalen Williams (19 points).

It’s great to feel like we left nothing on the table.

The second half was a celebration, with Minnesota unable to react. Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his wish for the fans to enjoy the moment and celebrate the team’s achievement.

This victory marks the fourth time the Thunder has won by at least 30 points this postseason, the most for any team in a single postseason. Furthermore, it’s the Thunder’s second consecutive closeout game victory with a significant point differential, following the 32-point win over the Nuggets. The only teams with multiple closeout wins by 30+ points in a playoff run were the 1987 Los Angeles Lakers and the 2008 Boston Celtics, both champions.

The Thunder now awaits the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals, where the Pacers lead the Knicks 3-1.

Despite the joy of winning the Western Conference championship, the Thunder is already focused on the Finals.

Obviously, we are happy for the moment, but this is not our goal. It’s not the end of the road. There’s only one more series to play.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
The team is one step away from its goal and is preparing for the four crucial games ahead.
