Basketball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games: Schedule Revealed

MIES, Switzerland – The excitement of basketball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will begin two days before the opening ceremony, according to organizers this Wednesday. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the world governing body for this sport, announced that the basketball schedule for Los Angeles has been revised. The matches will begin on July 12, 2028, prior to the opening ceremony scheduled for July 14. It has not yet been specified whether the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament, or both will begin before the official opening. A preliminary schedule, published last month, indicates that three basketball games will be played on July 12 and three more on July 13.

This adjustment allows the quarter-finals to be played over two days and also ensures that no match starts before midday, improving the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters.

The bronze medal matches will take place on July 28 and 29, while the gold medal matches will be played on July 29 and 30, the latter being the closing day of the Games. It is worth noting that several other sports are also scheduled to begin their competitions before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket, and soccer. The United States is the current Olympic basketball champion in both the men’s and women’s categories. The women have achieved eight consecutive gold medals, while the men have won five in a row.
