New European Basketball League: NBA and FIBA Working Together

The NBA and FIBA, the world governing body for basketball, are collaborating to launch a new European league. NBA commissioner Adam Silver revealed that the competition could start in 2027 or 2028, although the exact date is not yet defined. During a conference organized by Front Office Sports, Silver described 2027 as an “ambitious” start, considering the pending challenges, but did not rule out the possibility. He reaffirmed that the project could take between two and three years, suggesting the initial use of existing stadiums in Europe, while more modern infrastructure is developed.

I don’t think we want to go much beyond 2028. The opportunity to do something like this is now.

Silver mentioned that starting the league near the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics could be more strategic. In March, the NBA and FIBA announced their plans, ending years of speculation about the creation of this league. The project has advanced rapidly, with the incorporation of JPMorgan Chase and Raine Group to advise on finance and strategy. Silver and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum have held positive meetings with political leaders, teams, media, and potential investors in Europe, while work is underway at the league headquarters to finalize the project.

I’d say I’m optimistic about it.

The initial plans consider 16 teams, although this number could change. European clubs such as Real Madrid, Fenerbahce Istanbul, and Barcelona could be part of the NBA’s plans, along with other prominent football brands. Currently, approximately one in six NBA players is European, including Nikola Jokic from Serbia and Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece, who have won five of the last seven MVP awards, as well as Luka Doncic from Slovenia and Victor Wembanyama from France.

Basketball is probably the fastest growing sport in the world right now, and it’s the second biggest sport in Europe after football, so I think there’s a real opportunity.
