Malik Beasley, in legal and financial trouble

NBA player Malik Beasley is in the eye of the hurricane, facing serious legal and financial problems that could affect his professional career. According to reports, Beasley was evicted from his apartment in Detroit last Wednesday, amid a federal investigation into gambling. Court records show the property owner sued Beasley twice this year in Michigan’s 36th District Court, for a total of $21,505 in unpaid rent. Although the first case was dismissed in March, the court issued an eviction order in the second lawsuit, for $7,355, due to Beasley’s failure to respond. Beasley’s attorney in the federal gambling investigation, Steve Haney, has confirmed that he does not represent the player in this eviction matter. Meanwhile, Beasley’s social media posts suggest that he has been traveling around Europe in recent weeks. Beasley, 28, is the third NBA player to be investigated by the Eastern District of New York for allegations of gambling in the last 18 months. The accusations against him date back to the 2023-24 season, when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks. So far, no criminal charges have been filed against him.

An investigation is not an accusation. Malik has the same right to the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the United States Constitution. For now, he has not been charged with anything.

In addition to the rental issues and federal investigation, Beasley is facing a lawsuit from his former marketing agency, Hazan Sports Management, which alleges that he had difficulty returning a $650,000 advance earlier this year. According to reports, Beasley also has debts with a celebrity barber, a dentist, and a company that provides bridge loans to professional athletes. In sports, Beasley was in talks with the Detroit Pistons for a three-year, $42 million contract after a standout season. However, these talks have been paused. Throughout his nine-year NBA career, Beasley has earned almost $60 million.
