LeBron James: A New Chapter in the NBA with the Lakers

The basketball star, LeBron James, has started a new season with the Lakers, marking a couple of important milestones for his career. Upon stepping onto the court in his gold number 23 uniform, James enters his 23rd season in the NBA, a record that makes him the player with the most seasons in the league, surpassing Vince Carter. Also, this season represents a unique moment in his eight years with the Lakers: James faces the season with an expiring contract. Despite these unique circumstances, James, a 21-time All-Star player who comes from being selected for the All-NBA Second Team, assures that the contractual situation will not affect his performance on the court.

It will have no impact. I’m very excited about the challenges and the excitement of our team. We added some new players. We have another year with our coaching staff from last year. We have a full year with Luka [Doncic] and another year with the guys I’ve been with. So I’m very excited about that.

James emphasized that contractual issues are not a concern at this stage of his career, feeling honored to be able to continue playing at the highest level. In June, James exercised his player option for $52.6 million for this season. His agent, Rich Paul, stated that James is looking to compete for a championship and understands that the Lakers are building for the future. Last season, the Lakers secured the third position in the Western Conference, but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. When James was asked about what he would consider a successful season for the Lakers, he responded with a detailed perspective.

Let’s be detailed every day. We have to be detailed. And the Western Conference is a challenge. The league is tough and we have to be detailed in everything, in all facets of the game, both offensively and defensively. We have to hold each other accountable and we have to play championship basketball every day. And does that [always] result in wins? No. I mean, this is a win-loss league, you’re not going to win games even when you play well. And sometimes it’s when you don’t play well and you still win. That’s part of the game.

James, who suffered a grade 2 sprain in his left knee in the elimination game against Minnesota, indicated that his main focus will be preparing his body for an 82-game season. With the start of training camp and the first full practice on Tuesday, James hinted that he might have limitations. In other words, he intends to be mentally involved day by day, regardless of how ready his body is for the work. James also mentioned that this will be what he will monitor most closely when considering his future and possible retirement.
