Kyrie Irving Secures His Future with the Mavericks

The talented point guard for the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving, has decided to decline his player option for $43 million and plans to sign a three-year, $119 million contract with the franchise. This agreement, negotiated between Mavericks executives and Irving’s agent, Shetellia Riley Irving, ensures the player’s long-term continuity in Dallas, avoiding his entry into free agency. The new contract includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. During conversations about the player option and extension, both sides expressed their mutual commitment. The Mavericks value Irving’s leadership and ability to collaborate with figures like Anthony Davis and the next draft number 1, Cooper Flagg, under the direction of coach Jason Kidd and general manager Nico Harrison. Irving, a key leader on the Mavericks, averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists last season before suffering a torn ACL in his left knee in March.

Before the injury, executives from rival teams anticipated a contract for Irving with an annual value between 50 and 60 million dollars.

Irving is expected to miss the start of the 2025-26 season, but is confident of returning in January 2026. The Mavs plan to use the $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception to sign Irving with this deal. Among the possible targets for that salary slot were Dennis Schroder, D’Angelo Russell, Chris Paul, and Malcolm Brogdon. Irving’s importance to the Mavs increased after the shocking trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, a few months after Dallas’ participation in the NBA Finals.
