Hornets Cut Spencer Dinwiddie Before Season Starts
The Charlotte Hornets have decided to dispense with the services of the experienced point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, as announced by the team this Thursday.
Dinwiddie signed a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Hornets in early July, during free agency. However, Charlotte needed to free up guaranteed salary before the start of the regular season next week and opted to cut Dinwiddie in order to have the maximum of 15 standard contracts on the current roster.
Dinwiddie, who only participated in two preseason games with Charlotte, averaged 14.3 points and 6.2 assists in 30 games as a starter with the Dallas Mavericks last season. Overall, he averaged 11 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.6 rebounds in 27 minutes in 79 appearances with the Mavericks in the 2024-25 season.
Now, entering his twelfth season in the NBA, Dinwiddie played a key role as the sixth man on the Mavs team that reached the Western Conference finals in 2022. He arrived at the team as part of the deal for Kristaps Porzingis at the trade deadline and was sent to the Brooklyn Nets a year later as part of the Kyrie Irving trade.
Throughout his career, Dinwiddie has also played for the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 13.0 points and 5.1 assists in 27.7 minutes in 621 games (345 as a starter).
