De’Aaron Fox in Doubt for Season Start Against the Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs point guard, De’Aaron Fox, expressed doubts about his availability for the season opener on October 22 against Dallas, due to a right hamstring injury. Fox, 27, suffered the injury during a summer training session. It seems the team will keep him out of the preseason and likely the first game of the season as a precaution.

I definitely won’t be playing in the preseason, that’s for sure. I don’t think I’ll be ready for opening night. But we’ll see. I feel like I can play right now. But I don’t have that medical experience. I’m not going to lie to you: I was already running at 15 miles per hour [on a treadmill]. I think that’s probably faster than most of the guys who are here. So, when I say I think I’m ready, I really think I’m ready.

Fox signed a maximum four-year, $229 million extension during the summer, following a 2024-25 campaign that was interrupted by a left pinky finger injury that required surgery in March. Fox made his debut with the Spurs last February, after joining the club as part of a three-way trade involving several players and draft picks. Once an All-Star and All-NBA honoree, Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in 17 games last season for San Antonio, playing alongside franchise superstar Victor Wembanyama for only five games, as the latter’s season ended prematurely due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.

Wembanyama was a big reason why I wanted to come here. I see the youth and the talent they have. We know there will be growing pains, but you’d love to win while having growing pains instead of losing and trying to have moral victories.
