Cooper Flagg Shines in Mavericks Debut

Rookie Cooper Flagg, selected first overall in the draft, showcased his versatility and ability to influence the game in his preseason debut with the Dallas Mavericks. In the Mavericks’ 106-89 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder at Dickies Arena, Flagg made his mark on the court during the first half of the game. The 18-year-old accumulated 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a block in just 14 minutes of play.

That’s a fun style of basketball to play when the ball moves. It was fun.

All of Flagg’s points came in a dizzying two-minute and 38-second period in the second quarter. After grabbing a defensive rebound, Flagg raced up the court to score a layup while heavily pressured, thus getting his first points with 5:32 remaining in the quarter. He then hit a three-pointer and also converted two free throws after being fouled and scored another three-pointer off the dribble. Flagg shot 3-of-6 overall and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. In addition, he committed no turnovers, displaying a clean game while taking on some point guard responsibilities for the Mavs.

Just taking what the defense gives me. Keeping it simple, making the right play, pass or shot, whatever it is.

One of Flagg’s most notable moments occurred 85 seconds after the start of the game, when he blocked a layup attempt by Isaiah Joe, which triggered a counterattack that Anthony Davis finished with a dunk.

You had to see the defensive side, you had to see the playmaking and then the scoring. It was really, really good.

The Thunder, the current champions, did not have any of their usual starters on this preseason trip, which included a victory over the Charlotte Hornets.
