VJ Edgecombe: A Historic NBA Debut

On Wednesday night, Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe dazzled in his NBA debut, scoring 34 points in the 117-116 victory against the Boston Celtics. His eyes widened when he learned that he had outperformed most players in their first game since Wilt Chamberlain began his career.

I worked every day, and all my life, for moments like this. This is my dream.

Originally from the Bahamas and named Big 12 Rookie of the Year in his only season at Baylor, Edgecombe achieved the third-highest number of points in an NBA debut game. Chamberlain scored 43 points in his debut in 1959 with the Philadelphia Warriors. Sixers coach Nick Nurse praised Edgecombe’s performance, highlighting the significance of this achievement in his career. Edgecombe also set a record by scoring 14 points in the first quarter, surpassing the mark set by LeBron James in 2003.

It feels good that my name is mentioned with LeBron. I hope to have a long career ahead.

Edgecombe showcased his prowess on the court with 13 of 26 from the field and 5 of 13 from the three-point line, adding 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal to his performance. He scored 10 consecutive points in the first quarter and 9 in the last, contributing to the Sixers’ comeback. Dominick Barlow, Sixers teammate, highlighted Edgecombe’s calm and composure during the game. Edgecombe shined even with an outstanding performance by Tyrese Maxey, who scored 40 points. Edgecombe and Maxey’s combined 74 points tied for the second-most in a season-opening game in NBA history. Maxey highlighted Edgecombe’s confidence and comfort in his game, although he didn’t hesitate to joke about his teammate’s two missed free throws in the final seconds.
