De’Aaron Fox Secures His Future with the Spurs: Million-Dollar Extension
San Antonio Spurs star De’Aaron Fox has agreed to a four-year, maximum $229 million contract extension with the franchise. The announcement was made by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.
This maximum agreement does not include a player option for the final year and ensures Fox’s stay in San Antonio until the 2029-30 season. This renewal comes after Fox was traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Spurs.
Fox and his representative managed to finalize a transfer to San Antonio, his preferred destination, in February, and months later secure this lucrative long-term extension, also benefiting from a state without income tax, unlike his previous residence in California.
The Spurs selected guard Dylan Harper with the second pick in the June NBA draft, thus solidifying a talented and young backcourt with Fox, Harper, and Stephon Castle.
Fox and Victor Wembanyama, who only played five games together last season, have developed a close relationship and are ready to lead the Spurs’ core in the coming years, with the arrival of Harper and two consecutive Rookie of the Year award winners in Wembanyama and Castle.
Fox, who averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists in the 17 games he played with the Spurs last season, underwent surgery on March 18 to repair an injury to the tendon in his left pinky. He played the entire season with this injury, suffered during training camp in October.
In 62 games with the Spurs and Kings, Fox averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds. On November 15, he achieved a 60-point game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, setting a franchise record for the Kings. Nikola Jokic was the only other NBA player with a 60-point game last season.
Fox is one of only two players to average 20 points, 5 assists and 1 steal in each of the last six seasons, along with Luka Doncic, and is one of four players with 10,000 points, 3,000 assists and 700 steals since entering the NBA in 2017-18, along with James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Jokic.
