Dawn Staley Reveals Details of Her Interview with the Knicks

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley revealed that she would have accepted the head coaching position for the New York Knicks if it had been offered to her, according to statements on the “Post Moves” podcast.

“I would have had to do it. Not just for me. For women. To open [that door],” Staley commented.

Staley, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, explained that the opportunity to coach the Knicks was significant, especially because of the importance of the franchise. The 55-year-old coach, who has led the Gamecocks to three national championships, stated that she prepared adequately for the interview and felt she did well. However, during the podcast, she suggested that her chances may have been affected by the questions she asked the Knicks’ management. Staley questioned whether the Knicks had fully considered how hiring the first full-time female coach in the NBA would change the organization.

“How, if they hired me as the first [head] coach in the NBA, would it impact their daily work? Because I would,” Staley recounted about what she was asked during her interview.

Staley explained that the situation would involve greater media attention and questions that would not be asked of a male coach. The coach felt that the energy of the interview changed after those questions, which led her to conclude that she might have hurt her chances.
