IFAB Introduces Key Changes for the 2026 World Cup and the 2026-2027 Season
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has confirmed significant modifications to the football regulations that will come into effect on June 1st. These updates will be implemented in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and in the 2026-2027 football season.
Expansion of VAR Usage
One of the most notable new features is the expanded use of the video assistant referee (VAR) system. The VAR will be able to intervene to review decisions related to corner kicks and second yellow cards, thus seeking greater accuracy in refereeing decisions.
Measures to Reduce Lost Time
In addition to the VAR adjustments, IFAB has approved new rules aimed at reducing interruptions in matches. These measures seek to optimize effective playing time and improve the pace of the matches.
- Throw-ins and Goal Kicks: A five-second countdown will be implemented for the execution of throw-ins and goal kicks. If a team exceeds this time, possession will pass to the opponent. In the case of goal kicks, a corner kick will be awarded to the opposing team.
- Substitutions: A ten-second limit is set for substitutions. If a player takes more than that time to leave the field, the substitute must wait for the next interruption of the game to enter.
- Medical Attention: Players who leave the field to receive medical attention must remain off the field for at least one minute before being able to rejoin the match.
Tests and Future Revisions
The IFAB also announced that it will continue to evaluate possible changes to the offside rule, including the so-called Wenger Law. This system will be tested in the Canadian Premier League, whose next championship will begin in April.
Furthermore, IFAB will continue to analyze disciplinary measures to sanction players who use gestures such as covering their mouths to insult rivals or prevent offensive comments from being heard on the field.
