The Azteca Prepares to Shine: Reopening in 2026
The mythical Azteca Stadium, the scene of memorable World Cup finals in 1970 and 1986, is about to undergo a spectacular renovation. The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced that the stadium doors will reopen on March 28, 2026, preparing the ground for the World Cup.
We are joyfully preparing to welcome this global football celebration and are ready to announce that March 28, 2026, will be the reopening of the Azteca.

Brugada highlighted the pride that the Azteca represents for Mexico, as it will be the first stadium to host the opening of three editions of the World Cup.

Mexico City will be the most splendid venue. As it was in 1970 with the coronation of King Pelé, with Brazil, and in ’86 with the consecration of Maradona, with Argentina. This is a new opportunity to show Mexico as the navel of the world.

The press conference also addressed the public works that will be carried out to improve public spaces around the Azteca Stadium and other tourist spots in the capital, before the World Cup that will be played between June 11 and July 19, 2026.

The FIFA Fan Fest will be in the Zócalo of Mexico City and will have multiple activities for everyone, in addition, we will have soccer festivals in each of the 16 delegations of the capital so that fans can enjoy the matches.

Regarding security, a state-of-the-art video surveillance system will be implemented.
40,000 cameras have been acquired, to have a total of 123,000 in the city, which makes us the most surveilled city with this technology in all of Latin America.

The FIFA World Cup trophy will tour the 16 delegations of the Mexican capital between February and June.
The international media center will be located in Los Pinos.
In addition to the capital, Monterrey and Guadalajara will also be venues for World Cup matches.
