The legendary American gymnast Simone Biles, with an impressive record of 11 Olympic medals and 23 world titles, gave an inspiring talk in Buenos Aires, where she addressed crucial issues about mental health and sports. In the event “The Power of Belief”, Biles shared her personal and professional experiences, highlighting the importance of prioritizing emotional well-being.Biles recalled her decision to withdraw from several events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, a key moment in her career that marked a before and after in the conversation about mental health in sports. After suffering an anxiety crisis and mental block in Tokyo, Biles needed emotional support and rest to return to competition. This process culminated in her successful return at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she obtained three gold medals and one silver.Mental health remains a huge stigma in the world, particularly in the United States, because it is not talked about enough. It’s time to stop seeing it as a weakness.

The gymnast also spoke about gender equality and the representation of Black women in sports, mentioning Gabby Douglas as one of her inspirations. Biles expressed her desire to inspire new generations and highlighted her commitment to social causes, including the adoption system and her work as a mentor at Friends of the Children. Currently, Biles is in a period of rest, not ruling out her participation in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. During her visit to Buenos Aires, within the framework of the city’s designation as World Sports Capital 2027, Biles was received by Mayor Jorge Macri and shared a moment with Uruguayan soccer player Edinson Cavani.
