Riqui Puig: New Surgery and Long Absence at Los Angeles Galaxy

Spanish midfielder Riqui Puig, a key figure for the Los Angeles Galaxy, has undergone a new surgical intervention on his left knee due to a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The news was confirmed this Saturday by the Los Angeles franchise.

This is the second time Puig has to go through surgery for the same injury, suffered in December 2024. The operation, which was performed successfully, will keep the player off the courts for the entire 2026 MLS season, with a return scheduled for the start of the 2027 campaign.

The Galaxy reported, through a statement, that the player “is in the process of recovery and is expected to be able to fully rejoin the squad for the start of the 2027 season.” The injury occurred in a match against Seattle Sounders in December 2024. Despite the severity of the injury, Puig continued playing for approximately 30 minutes, and even provided the crucial assist that allowed the Galaxy to advance to the MLS final. As a result of this injury, Puig missed the entire 2025 season and will now also be absent in the 2026 season, which will prolong his time away from competition for more than two years. With 26 years old, Riqui Puig is recognized for his talent, creativity, and leadership in the midfield of American soccer. His prolonged absence represents a significant challenge for the Galaxy’s plans, which will have to readjust its strategy without its main playmaker. The club is confident that the recovery process will allow Puig to return in full physical form in 2027, the year his current contract with the Californian entity ends.
