Suspended match between Medellín and Flamengo due to incidents at the Atanasio Girardot
Medellín, Colombia – The match between Deportivo Independiente Medellín and Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, corresponding to the Copa Libertadores, was abruptly interrupted this Thursday.
The suspension occurred at the fourth minute of the match, due to serious incidents involving fans at the Atanasio Girardot stadium.
The situation unfolded in one of the stadium stands, where supporters of the Colombian team expressed their discontent with the current situation of the club, recently eliminated from the local tournament.
During the protest, pyrotechnic devices were launched from the north stand, generating a dense smoke that hindered visibility on the playing field. Additionally, objects were thrown and attempts were made to invade the field.
Faced with the chaos, Venezuelan referee Jesús Valenzuela made the decision to stop the match and order both teams to return to the locker rooms, while safety was assessed.
The images of the incident showed the players of Medellín and Flamengo awaiting instructions, while the authorities tried to control the situation in the stands.
So far, neither the South American Football Confederation nor the clubs involved have issued an official decision on the resumption or definitive suspension of the match.
This incident once again highlights the concern about violence at sporting events in South America, especially in large-scale continental tournaments.
