Rafael Furcal Arrested in Florida: Serious Charges for Assault and Battery

Former Major League shortstop and three-time All-Star, Rafael Furcal, was arrested this week in Broward County, Florida.

According to court records, the 47-year-old former baseball player, a Weston resident, surrendered on Wednesday to face two felony charges related to an incident that occurred on Monday.

Serious Charges

Furcal faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and throwing missiles at dwellings, vehicles, buildings, or aircraft, according to information available online.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), in charge of the investigation, has not yet provided details about the incident.

Furcal owns a residence valued at $5.1 million in the Windmill Reserve community in Weston, according to county property records.

Major League Career

Born in the Dominican Republic, Furcal had a distinguished 14-season career in Major League Baseball, playing primarily with the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

  • Won a World Series in 2011 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

He retired after a brief stint with the Miami Marlins in 2014.

This is not Furcal’s first legal problem. During his time in Atlanta, he was arrested twice for driving under the influence of alcohol, in 2000 and 2004.

As of the time of this publication, Furcal was no longer listed in the BSO system’s active inmate list.
