Pyramids FC, an Egyptian team, has marked a milestone in its young history by being crowned African champion. Founded in 2018 by Saudi sheikh Turki Al-Sheikh, current owner of UD Almería, the club joins the select group of Egyptian teams that have reached continental glory, alongside Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily.

A Meteoric Rise

The history of Pyramids FC began in 2008 as Al Assiouty Sport in Beni Seuf. After winning Group A of the Second Division in the 2016-17 season, the team achieved promotion to the Premier League, the top tier of Egyptian football.

The Investment and the Change of Course

In the summer of 2018, Turki Al-Sheikh acquired the club, completely transforming it with an investment of 60 million euros. The team changed its name to Pyramids FC and moved to Cairo, marking a new chapter in its trajectory.

Al-Sheikh, initially involved with Al Ahly, decided to create his own project with the aim of dominating African football. In the 2018/2019 season, he invested 40 million euros in signings, an unprecedented figure on the continent.

Pyramids FC marketing campaign
The club implemented an aggressive marketing campaign, offering financial incentives to attract fans. In addition, a television channel was created and figures like John Terry participated. During Al-Sheikh’s management, Egyptian football was still grappling with the ban on public attendance in stadiums, which affected the attendance at Pyramids FC matches.

Despite the efforts, the interest of the Cairo fans was limited. In its first season with the new name, the team finished in third place in the Premier League and lost the final of the Egyptian Cup.

In July 2019, Salem Al Shamsi acquired the club, solidifying Pyramids FC as one of the most important teams in Egypt, always competing in the top positions.

The recent victory in the African competition, added to the second place in the league, makes the current season the most successful in the club’s history.

Pyramids FC has the opportunity to add a new title in the Egyptian Cup final, which will be played on June 5 against Zamalek.
