Firm Convictions for Altercations at PSG Celebrations
Paris – Eight individuals have been sentenced to firm prison terms with immediate entry, following their participation in the riots that occurred during the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) celebrations for their victory in the Champions League final. The Paris Prosecutor’s Office reported that as of Tuesday, 24 people had been tried under the immediate appearance procedure. They were accused of attacking law enforcement, in many cases with pyrotechnic devices, and of looting businesses. Sentences imposed range from three months exempt from compliance to 12 months, with a firm part that resulted in imprisonment.Additionally, another 19 suspects were brought before a judge and charged with shoplifting, and legal proceedings have been initiated against more than 40 people.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the cases of 253 people arrested during the riots have been handled, including 15 minors. Following judicial evaluation, the cases of 91 adults and two minors were dismissed.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that the “rapid drafting of the records”, in a context where the maintenance of order is a priority, does not always allow for the retention of infractions that had initially been considered.
The Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, expressed his dissatisfaction with the initial sentences, considering them insufficient, and advocated for a legal modification to toughen the sanctions. Its objective is to establish a “systematic minimum sentence” with “a minimum of three months in firm prison” for any assault against a representative of the State.
