Ohtani Could Return to Pitch This Weekend

Shohei Ohtani’s return as a pitcher could be closer than expected. The Los Angeles Dodgers star player, who hasn’t pitched regularly since his elbow surgery in 2023, could return to the mound this Saturday, June 29, in Kansas City, according to manager Dave Roberts. Roberts, who will manage the All-Star Game for the National League this year, ruled out the possibility of Ohtani pitching in the Midsummer Classic. However, he left the door open for his offensive participation, even as a leadoff hitter, and did not rule out his possible integration into the Home Run Derby: “That’s a question for Shohei,” he commented. In a recent appearance as a pitcher against the Washington Nationals, Ohtani demonstrated his ability by throwing 12 strikes in 18 pitches, reaching up to 98.8 mph with his fastball and achieving two strikeouts. His official return to the mound was on June 16 against the San Diego Padres, where he allowed one earned run in one inning. Ohtani, recognized three times as Most Valuable Player, signed a record contract of US$700 million for 10 years with the Dodgers. This season, he leads the fan voting in the National League as designated hitter for the All-Star Game and maintains an offensive line of .291 average, with 26 home runs and 49 RBIs.

“He’s the best player, and it’s going to be exciting for the fans to see him in Atlanta,” Roberts highlighted about Ohtani’s likely presence as a batter in the All-Star Game.
