Sports in Latin America kicked off 2025 with a January full of significant events, crucial definitions, and impressive scenarios. The NFL, the South American Under-20 Championship, the Baseball Hall of Fame, and Formula E were some of the protagonists of this month.

NFL: Road to Super Bowl LIX

The NFL season reached its peak in January with the conference finals, where the teams that would compete in Super Bowl LIX were defined. The Philadelphia Eagles, led by Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley, were crowned champions of the National Conference (NFC). For their part, the Kansas City Chiefs, with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce at the helm, dominated the American Conference (AFC). For the Eagles, this final represented their fifth appearance in a game for the Vince Lombardi trophy, seeking revenge for the defeat suffered in 2023. The Chiefs, on the other hand, achieved their fifth participation in six years, solidifying their status as a dominant team and starting as slight favorites for the decisive match, scheduled for January 26.

South American U-20 Championship: Goals and Qualified

The South American U-20 Championship, held in Venezuela, brought together ten national teams competing for four spots in the category’s World Cup. Argentina was a protagonist by achieving one of the most resounding victories of the tournament, thrashing their classic rival 6-0, a result that marked the development of the championship. After the initial phase and the final hexagonal stage, the national teams of Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil continued with their aspirations, while Venezuela, the host country, along with Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, were eliminated.

Baseball Hall of Fame 2025

January also brought historic news for baseball. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) elected three new figures to enter the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2025:

  • Ichiro Suzuki, the first Asian-born player to be enshrined.
  • CC Sabathia, outstanding left-handed pitcher.
  • Billy Wagner, renowned closer.
Despite these new additions, Mariano Rivera (2019) remains the only player unanimously elected in the history of the Hall of Fame.

Formula E: First Roar of the Year

Electric motors were also felt in January with the Mexico City E-Prix. British driver Oliver Rowland, at the wheel of a Nissan, took the victory on January 11, achieving his third win in the category. Meanwhile, Porsche took the lead in the drivers’ championship, with António Félix da Costa leading the World Championship after finishing second in Mexico and accumulating 37 points in the overall standings.
