NFL Steps Away from the Fanatics Flag Football Classic

The National Football League (NFL) issued an official statement this Friday, informing its 32 franchises about its position regarding the Fanatics Flag Football Classic. This tournament, which will feature prominent figures such as Tom Brady, is scheduled for March 21, 2026, at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the statement, the NFL made it clear that it has no responsibility for the event. In addition, the league specified that any injuries suffered by the players during the tournament will be considered as “not related to American football”, without contractual coverage or official protection from the NFL. This statement comes after the announcement of the participation of Tom Brady, considered one of the best quarterbacks in history, and other NFL stars. Among the confirmed players are Christian McCaffrey (49ers), CeeDee Lamb (Cowboys), Maxx Crosby (Raiders), Sauce Gardner (Jets), and Myles Garrett (Browns). The tournament will consist of three eight-player flag football teams, led by coaches Pete Carroll (Raiders), Sean Payton (Broncos), and Kyle Shanahan (49ers). The NFL also indicated that each franchise must decide whether or not to authorize the participation of its players. If participation is allowed, the franchise must notify the NFL in writing. So far, the Dallas Cowboys have confirmed that CeeDee Lamb is cleared to play, although they have not clarified what will happen in case of injury. The NFL recalled that this tournament is not contemplated in the resolution that allows players to participate in Olympic flag football for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, which reinforces its disassociation from the event in Arabia.
