Cleveland, USA – Major League Baseball (MLB) has extended the non-disciplinary paid leave of Dominican pitcher Luis L. Ortiz, of the Cleveland Guardians, until August 31, while an ongoing investigation continues. MLB and the Players Association (MLBPA) have agreed to extend Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz’s non-disciplinary paid leave through games on August 31, while MLB continues its investigation. Ortiz, 26 years old, was initially removed from the team on July 3, prior to the All-Star break. During this period, the pitcher cannot be at the team’s facilities or be part of the 40-player roster, although he maintains authorized communication with the organization.

The Cleveland Guardians issued a statement where they expressed their position:

We have been informed of the extension and will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation. In his debut season with the Guardians, following his arrival from the Pittsburgh Pirates last December, Ortiz has participated in 16 starts, recording an ERA of 4.36 in 88.2 innings pitched. To cover for Ortiz’s absence in the starting rotation, the Cleveland team promoted left-hander Joey Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus on July 3. The investigation is ongoing, and MLB has not provided additional details about its nature or possible dates for a resolution.
