New York Mets Secure Devin Williams to Bolster Bullpen
The New York Mets have reached an agreement with free agent reliever Devin Williams for three years and $45 million, according to sources close to the negotiation. The team has not yet made the signing official.
Williams, who pitched the 2025 season with the Yankees, now joins the city’s rival team.
Despite recording the statistically least outstanding season of his career, with an ERA of 4.79 in 67 appearances, the Mets believe that his actual performance was superior to what traditional statistics indicate.
The club is interested in keeping Puerto Rican closer Edwin Díaz. If that happens, Williams could take on the setup role.
The Yankees decided not to offer him a qualifying offer, so the Mets will not have to give up Draft picks or face penalties.Although its effectiveness was high, advanced statistics suggest that Williams was unlucky. His FIP was 2.68 and his expected ERA was 3.04.
Despite allowing a percentage of strong contacts of 35.7%, the highest of his career, this was not considered worrying.
His signature “airbender” change of speed remains effective, with a rival batting average of .194 and a 37.3% whiff rate in 2025.
With a four-seam fastball that reaches 95 mph and his dominant changeup, Williams relied primarily on this last pitch last season (52.4% usage).Promising Season Finale
Williams finished 2025 on a positive note: nine scoreless appearances, with only two walks and 12 strikeouts in nine innings. In the postseason, he pitched four additional scoreless innings with the Yankees.
Throughout his seven seasons in the Major Leagues, Williams has demonstrated consistency and durability, except in 2024, when he missed time due to stress fractures in his back. After returning that year, he recorded an excellent 1.25 ERA in 22 appearances with Milwaukee.
