SANTO DOMINGO – The New York Mets have officially announced the appointment of Gilbert Gómez as first base and outfield coach for the upcoming Major League season. This appointment marks a significant milestone in the career of one of the most promising young coaches in the organization.
The Mets’ decision highlights the leadership, effective communication with players, and modern vision of the game that characterize Gómez. His steady rise within the Mets’ development system has made him a key piece.
Gómez began his professional career in 2009 when he was signed by the Mets. In 2012, he was selected by the Tigres del Licey in the Rookie Draft. He decided to focus on his career as a coach in 2017, at the age of 25.In his career as a coach, Gómez has held various roles. In 2021, he was the hitting coach for the Rookie League. Subsequently, in 2022, he took on the role of bench coach for St. Lucie (Class A), and in 2023, he was promoted to manager of the team. His success continued in 2025, when he led the Brooklyn Cyclones to win the South Atlantic League championship, achieving the franchise’s first title in that circuit.
Under his direction, the Cyclones set a record of 72 regular season wins and a perfect postseason (4-0).
That same year, Gómez was selected as manager of the “Breakout Game” of the MLB preseason. In addition, he was named assistant to manager Albert Pujols for the next World Baseball Classic.
Previously, he was part of the Dominican technical team that won the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he served as batting coach and third base coach.
With the Tigres del Licey, Gómez is in his fifth season, performing roles from quality control coach to manager. He led the club to the 2023-24 championship and two consecutive Series Finales.
He became the youngest champion manager in LIDOM history, at 31 years and 324 days old, surpassing Audo Vicente’s record.
Gómez is also the seventh native manager in the history of the Dominican league to win a title in his debut season.
