McLaren Dominates Free Practice at Imola: Piastri and Norris Lead
The McLaren team continues to demonstrate its power on the Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit during the second free practice session of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Oscar Piastri led the session, followed very closely by his teammate, Lando Norris.
This performance replicates the 1-2 that McLaren achieved in the morning session, solidifying their strong start to the seventh weekend of the Formula 1 season.
Piastri, who leads the world championship, set a time of 1:15.293 on his best lap of the 28 completed. Norris was just 35 thousandths of a second behind, demonstrating the team’s internal competitiveness. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) was in third place, 276 thousandths of a second behind the leader.
All drivers achieved their best times using the C6 super-soft tire compound, which makes its debut this season.
Carlos Sainz (Williams) finished in tenth position, 641 thousandths of a second behind Piastri, after completing 29 laps.
Franco Colapinto, in his return to F1 with Alpine as a replacement for Jack Doohan, placed in thirteenth position, 751 thousandths of a second behind the leader, after 29 laps.
Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who used medium tires, finished in fourteenth place, 927 thousandths of a second behind Piastri’s time, after 21 laps.
The session was briefly interrupted by a red flag with six minutes remaining, due to an incident with Isack Hadjar (RB) at the Tamburello corner.
The weather conditions at the end of the session recorded 19°C in the environment and 33°C on the asphalt, providing a stable environment for the race simulations that marked the end of the training.
