Women’s League 2025-26: A New Beginning

The 2025-26 season of the Spanish Women’s League promises strong emotions, with FC Barcelona defending their title and Real Madrid eager to snatch the crown. The competition comes with important new features that seek to raise the level of the tournament.

Technological Innovation and Playgrounds

One of the main new features is the implementation of the “Football Video Support” (FVS) system, which will seek to minimize refereeing errors. In addition, for the first time, all stadiums will have natural grass, improving the quality of the game. The FVS system, a VAR on demand validated by FIFA, will allow reviewing key plays such as goals, penalties, red cards, and cases of mistaken identity, making the game fairer and more transparent.

Format and Key Dates

The season will start on Saturday, August 30th and will run until the weekend of May 30th and 31st, 2026. The format of 30 matchdays will be maintained, without midweek matches, except for matchday 29 if a Spanish team reaches the final of the Women’s Champions League.

Competing Teams

The League will have sixteen teams, including the return of Alhama CF ElPozo and DUX Logroño, who are looking to consolidate in the top category.

Barcelona: Challenges and Renewal

Barcelona, after becoming a benchmark in world football, will face a challenging season. With several important departures and only one signing, the team will seek to maintain its dominance amid economic adjustments.

Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid: Title Contenders

Real Madrid, after defeating Barcelona last season, is emerging as a strong contender. Atlético de Madrid will also seek the top, with the recent incorporation of Julia Bartel, a promising midfielder.

Other Teams in the Fight

Real Sociedad and Athletic will try to join the fight for the top spots. Real Sociedad will have Arturo Ruiz as their new coach, while Athletic will have Javier Lerga on the bench.

Levante: A Challenge of Permanence

Levante will seek to avoid relegation problems, but suffered a significant loss with the departure of their top scorer, Ivonne Chacón.

Other Teams and Coaches

The Costa Adeje Tenerife starts with great support from its fans. Deportivo Abanca and RCD Espanyol aim to secure their permanence for the second consecutive year. This season will feature four coaches: Irene Ferreras (Granada CF), Ana Junyent (FC Badalona Women), Emily Lima (Levante UD), and Sara Monforte. In addition, there will be eight debutants in Liga F: Javier Lerga (Athletic), Pau Quesada (Real Madrid), Emily Lima, Iñaki Goikoetxea (Eibar), Javier Aguado (Madrid CFF) and Jovi García (Alhama).
