The Women’s League 2025-26: Innovation and Competition at the Highest Level

The 2025-26 season of the Spanish Women’s League promises strong emotions, with FC Barcelona defending the title and Real Madrid ready to snatch the crown. The competition arrives with important new features that promise to revolutionize the game and increase excitement.

Technological Innovation and First Division Stadiums

The implementation of the “Football Video Support” (FVS) system is one of the major innovations this season. This system, designed to minimize errors, will function as a VAR on demand, validated by FIFA to review key plays such as goals, penalties, red cards, and identity errors. In addition, for the first time, all stadiums will have natural grass, a significant change that seeks to improve the quality of the game.

Calendar and Competition Format

La Liga will start on Saturday, August 30th and will run until the weekend of May 30th and 31st, 2026. The game format will consist of 30 matchdays, with no midweek matches, except for matchday 29, which could be played if a Spanish team reaches the final of the Women’s Champions League.

Aspiring Teams and New Challenges

The competition will feature 16 teams, including the return of Alhama CF ElPozo and DUX Logroño. FC Barcelona, after a season of dominance, faces a significant challenge with several key players leaving. Real Madrid, after achieving important victories last season, is emerging as the main competitor. Atlético de Madrid will also seek a place at the top, with the incorporation of Júlia Bartel.

New Coaches and Team Movements

Real Sociedad and Athletic will also seek a place in the top positions. Arturo Ruiz will manage Real Sociedad and Javier Lerga will be in charge of Athletic. Meanwhile, Levante will try to improve their performance, although they suffered the loss of their top scorer, Ivonne Chacón. Other teams such as Costa Adeje Tenerife, Deportivo Abanca and RCD Espanyol will seek to remain in the league. This season will feature four coaches: Irene Ferreras (Granada CF), Ana Junyent (FC Badalona Women), Emily Lima (Levante UD), and Sara Monforte. A total of eight coaches will debut in Liga F: Javier Lerga (Athletic), Pau Quesada (Real Madrid), Emily Lima, Iñaki Goikoetxea (Eibar), Javier Aguado (Madrid CFF) and Jovi García (Alhama).
