Escogido Bolsters Rotation with José Urquidy for the Postseason

The Leones del Escogido have announced the incorporation of right-handed pitcher José Urquidy to strengthen their team for the postseason of the Dominican professional baseball tournament, according to the Baseball Operations management of the organization. Urquidy, aged 30, joins the scarlet team with an outstanding career in the Major Leagues. The Mexican pitcher accumulated six seasons of experience in the Majors, pitching between 2019 and 2025. His record is 27-16, with an ERA of 4.00, a WHIP of 1.15 and a total of 329 strikeouts in 407.1 innings, mainly with the Houston Astros. A high point in his career was his participation in the 2022 World Series, where he was part of the Houston team that was crowned champion. In that tournament, Urquidy had an outstanding performance against the Philadelphia Phillies, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four batters.

“The arrival of Urquidy gives us a proven pitcher with experience in high-demand scenarios. His control, maturity, and knowledge of the game strengthen our rotation from the start of the Round Robin, and we trust that he will be a key piece,” said general manager Carlos Peña.

In the recent fall-winter season, Urquidy played with the Venados de Mazatlán in the Mexican Pacific League. There, he demonstrated an excellent performance, recording an ERA of 1.09, a WHIP of 0.84, and 35 strikeouts in 33.0 innings. His record was 3-1, with an allowed batting average of .183. Urquidy is expected to be part of the Leones del Escogido’s rotation, a team that will begin its participation in the Round Robin this Saturday, December 27, facing the Águilas Cibaeñas at 5:00 in the afternoon at the Cibao stadium.
