Santo Domingo.- The suspension of the three-game series between the Gigantes del Cibao and the Águilas Cibaeñas in New York has taken a legal turn. The company Latin Events, LLC has filed a lawsuit to recover US$775,000, an amount advanced to the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (Lidom), both teams, and the National Federation of Professional Baseball Players (Fenapepro). The lawsuit, filed on November 21 in the Civil and Commercial Chamber of the Court of First Instance of the National District, also demands the payment of 2% monthly interest from November. Latin Events alleges breach of contract by the defendants and economic damages resulting from the cancellation of the event.

Breakdown of Payments Made

  • US$275,000 to the Águilas Cibaeñas BBC, in two payments.
  • US$175,000 to Lidom, in two payments.
  • US$175,000 to Skanuss Consoulting, a company that manages the Gigantes del Cibao.
  • US$150,000 to Fenapepro.

Causes for Cancellation

Latin Events argues that the series, scheduled from November 7th to 9th at Citi Field, was affected by “irresistible and unforeseeable circumstances” that impacted ticket sales.
  • Increase in ICE immigration raids in New York.
  • The realization of the Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic All-Star Game one week later, at the same venue, organized by Fenapepro.
The company also accuses the teams and the league of refusing to renegotiate the contractual conditions, which they consider an act of bad faith that generated economic losses.

Lidom’s Response

Vitelio Mejía, president of Lidom, informed that the league has initiated a legal process against Latin Events for breach of contract. Mejía declared that the series was unilaterally canceled and that the contract clearly establishes the handling of funds. The case will be resolved in the courts.

A Conflict with Background

The relationship between Latin Events and Lidom began in 2023 with a successful series between Águilas and Licey. However, in 2024 the event was reduced to a single game and was marked by mutual accusations of non-compliance. The failed 2025 series has intensified the conflict, which will now be resolved in court.
