San Francisco de Macorís – The Gigantes del Cibao have secured the continuity of right-handed pitcher Jimmy Cordero, after reaching an agreement as a free agent for the next two seasons in the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM).
Cordero, originally from San Cristóbal and 34 years old, will continue to reinforce the team’s bullpen. His arrival to the team occurred the previous season through a trade, joining pitchers Wilber Dotel and Fernando Abad, as well as outfielder Ricardo Céspedes.
The veteran reliever was originally selected by the Leones del Escogido in the 2014 rookie draft. He has a distinguished career of nine seasons in the LIDOM, establishing himself as one of the most reliable arms from the bullpen.
In his regular season career, Cordero exhibits a 2-4 record with an ERA of 2.84 in 97 games. In 95.0 innings pitched, he has maintained a WHIP of 1.27. During this time, he has achieved 18 saves, allowing 83 hits, granting 38 walks, and accumulating 87 strikeouts.
Regarding his postseason performance, he has participated on four occasions, accumulating three saves and 29 strikeouts in 25.0 innings, which demonstrates his ability to pitch in high-pressure moments.
His performance with the Gigantes del Cibao in the previous season was crucial for the team’s relief, with an ERA of 1.08 in eight appearances, a record of 0-0, in 8.1 innings pitched, striking out 11 batters, conceding three walks and finishing with a WHIP of 0.72.
