Leones del Escogido roar with victory against Estrellas Orientales
Santo Domingo – Right-handed pitcher Grant Gavin led the Leones del Escogido to victory with an outstanding performance of five innings, defeating the Estrellas Orientales with a score of 2-0 at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium early this Tuesday morning.
Gavin, with a 1-0 record, demonstrated his dominance on the mound by striking out five batters without conceding walks, allowing only four hits.
The bullpen of the “melenudos” ensured the shutout, with effective contributions from Rolddy Muñoz (1.0), Henry Sosa (1.0), Iván Armstrong (1.0) and Jimmy Cordero (1.0), who earned his first save of the season.
The Escogido’s offense made itself felt in the fourth inning against pitcher Nate Antone. Yamaico Navarro, after receiving a walk, advanced to third base thanks to a single by Junior Lake. Jonathan Arauz drove in both runs with a hit to right field.
Antone (0-1) took the loss, after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, two strikeouts, and three walks.
In the Lions’ attack, Araúz stood out with a 1-3 and two RBIs, Lake batted 2-1 with a run scored and a walk, and Navarro 2-1, with a run scored and a walk.
By the Estrellas Orientales, Euribiel Ángeles connected a double in his 3-1 performance, and Rodolfo Durán also achieved a double in his 3-1 game.
The match, which was originally scheduled for 7:15 p.m. and was postponed from the previous Thursday, began with a three-hour delay.
With this victory, the Escogido improves its record to 1-4, while the Estrellas Orientales are left with a record of 4-1.
The Lions are preparing for their first road trip of the season to San Francisco de Macorís this Tuesday, where they will face the Gigantes del Cibao at the Julián Javier stadium.
