Félix Reyes Shines in His Phillies Debut
Philadelphia – Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson was looking for an offensive energy boost for his team and found it in the debut of Dominican Félix Reyes.
In his first at-bat in the Major Leagues, Reyes hit a home run to right field in the second inning against Atlanta Braves left-handed pitcher Chris Sale, giving the Phillies a 1-0 lead at Citizens Bank Park.
This home run makes Reyes the seventh player in Phillies history to hit a home run in his first at-bat in the Majors, something not seen since 2023.
The outfielder was called up on Friday from Triple-A (Lehigh Valley), replacing Otto Kemp, who failed to establish himself after a difficult start. To make room on the roster, the team designated Cuban Pedro León for assignment.
The decision was made at a time when the team was experiencing offensive difficulties, especially against left-handed pitchers, where their collective numbers were low. Thomson acknowledged that Kemp’s situation was complicated, due to the lack of consistent at-bats, but explained that the team needed immediate changes.
Reyes, 24 years old, had performed well in the minor leagues with a .333 average and a .999 OPS in 18 games, as well as a solid performance in spring training. This earned him the opportunity to join the major league team, where he will share time in left field with Brandon Marsh.
The culminating moment arrived when, after letting two pitches from Sale pass, Reyes took advantage of a fastball in the center of the plate and sent it out of the park. He celebrated enthusiastically as he ran the bases, even losing his helmet along the way, in a scene that marked a dream start to his career in the Major Leagues.
With this debut, the young Dominican not only met expectations, but also offered a sign of hope for a Phillies team looking to regain their best offensive version.
