Santo Domingo – Renowned Dominican former baseball player David Ortiz was honored this Friday with the 2025 Humanitarian Award, granted by The Trust For The Americas, an entity linked to the Organization of American States (OAS). This recognition celebrates his outstanding work through the foundation he leads, dedicated to providing assistance to children facing heart problems.
A Legacy of Solidarity
The creation of the “David Ortiz Children’s Fund” organization dates back to 2005, after a visit that deeply moved the athlete to a Dominican hospital. Since then, the foundation has been a beacon of hope for thousands of families.
Ortiz and his team’s work has facilitated more than 1,600 pediatric cardiac surgeries and has extended its support to 16,000 children with health problems in the Dominican Republic and New England, United States.
Through the ‘David Ortiz Children’s Fund,’ thousands of families have received support in very difficult times. This work offers hope, and hope is the most important thing one can offer.
Linda Eddleman, director of The Trust For The Americas, highlighted Ortiz’s commitment to young people who need urgent medical attention. She emphasized that this award is a recognition of work that transforms lives and leaves an indelible mark.
In his thank-you speech, Ortiz expressed his gratitude to God and the OAS, emphasizing that his work through the foundation is his greatest achievement.
Ortiz recalled the crucial moment that prompted him to create the foundation, after a visit to the Center for Advanced Diagnostic Medicine and Telemedicine (Cedimat) in Santo Domingo. The situation of the children he found in the hospital moved him deeply, motivating him to start this project that has changed so many lives.
Furthermore, Ortiz took the opportunity to defend the Dominican community in the United States, highlighting their nobility and hardworking spirit.
The Dominican Republic’s Chancellor, Roberto Álvarez, highlighted the importance of Ortiz’s work, which has allowed children with heart problems to have a normal life. Álvarez praised Ortiz as an exemplary figure who proudly carries the Dominican spirit and joy.
